Teaching Nepali adding vowel sign aa



Adding vowel sign  aa to the consonant to make a new word or sound was easy and fun.  The cards with the vowel signs are 5.5 by 4.5 inches. Children put different letters on the vowel sign card and said the new word. They enjoyed reading from the word wall too.

This course is for the LKG. Few guessed the words in the word list by just looking at the picture. The picture is used as hint to help read the words from the list. The words in the list rhymes with the picture.

This was our repetition class and children are perfect in reading. They read the story

Matching cards in Nepali


I made these matching cards for L KG during Dashain holidays and introduced them on the very first day after Dashain. It was a kind of revision without writing where even older children were confused. I wanted them to exercise like below where picture cards are displayed on the extreme left and two word cards on the right simultaneously.Then they remove the incorrect card. But older children did their way because like always they took it for matching picture cards to the corresponding words cards. Anyway what matters ultimately is that they remember the correct spelling.

I  advised L KG teachers to start with few cards and slowly increase the number. She  mixed up few cards but from two different sets. The cards are neither too small nor too big. They are 2 by 1 inches, thick and covered with cello tape. I prefer thick cello tape coated cards over laminated ones as picking up is easier. The pictures are from old but same coursebook which children are following. I want them to be familiar with the pictures and words. Usually teachers spend too much time writing in copies and less time dealing with individual child. I feel this should help teachers from writing endlessly.
There are as many as 12 and 15 in two different sets.
I am glad teachers found old cocoa powder tin and eraser box to hold different cards.

Birds -2


 I spent the weekend making nomenclature cards in Nepali. I have the English version so just felt like to make a similar one in Nepali. I think children enjoyed the Nepali cards.

Even the youngest lot enjoyed matching cards. We can use the same cards for memory and lotto games too.

While making materials  is fun and tiring its the organizing part that is important. I wish the materials last atleast few years so I request  teachers to remind children not fold or chew cards.

Prop story-I know an old lady who swallowed a fly

With my crazy and busy schedule it is increasingly difficult to find time for making materials and blogging . But today I thank Indian Prime Minister  for visiting our country. Its a two days holiday for schools and colleges in Kathmandu Valley and so I decided to make a prop story-

Nepali for Lower Kindergarten

     

This year we have slowed down the L KG course a bit as we have few children who are regular but not quite interested in writing. They enjoy afternoon classes when they engage themselves in practical work. I too prefer them to do their writings in the mornings when they are fresh and active. Written work is a must for preschoolers in Nepal. Besides recognizing letters we make sure they write beautifully and clearly. So this is a kind of pressure for few who do not like to write. I wish I didn't have to force them write but ............

Anyway these teaching materials should help children recognize difficult Nepali words. It can be used in different ways like placing picture card first and then matching word card or the other way. They can also group the cards like below.

I made few pocket charts with removable cards that rhyme and children find it easy to read. The pocket charts are little above their height.

The white and yellow are three letter word cards without any picture. Children can match the cards by themselves or the teachers can ask them to find and match. Hope children enjoy learning.

Pink Series-2


Here is my son's puzzle cards which I bought in Kyoto. Its a three letter words cards for further practice in making words. I love these cards because we can use it two ways both front and back.


This is another booklet in the pink series. I drew four pictures of fox in A-4 size paper, colored, cut along the outline, pasted on thick construction paper and covered with wide cello tape.

Nepali for L KG and U KG


Once the children are familiar with Nepali alphabets we have many exercises for further practice. This is usually for the children of L KG and U KG. I chose contrasting colors for word list cards and laminated them. The word list cards are 8 by 6 inches.

Children enjoy Nepali lotto game. The picture cards are 8 by 6 inches and word cards are 2 by 1.5 inches. The picture cards and word cards are pasted on thick cardboard and covered with wide cello tape as I often do. The game is played under teacher’s supervision as children need to read correctly and place the word card on the correct picture. Each picture card  has  few different pictures. They are now familiar with the rules.  I have cut pictures mostly from Nepali book published by Pustak Prakashan Griha Pvt Ltd.

Children  played these lotto games during summer and now they are surprisingly fluent in reading. Teachers make every effort  in guiding these small group of children who are very moody and pampered. They love to show off their talent and call me every now and then to hear them read. My comments and gestures mean a lot to them.

Pink series-1

I enjoyed collecting objects for pink boxes. Most of them are  my children's toys. I keep eight to ten objects and change when necessary. The picture and word cards are laminated
